Janmashtami 2019: Things You Didn’t Know About Lord Krishna

23 Aug, 2019 11:56 IST|Sakshi
Janmashtami 2019

Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated the world over. In India, little boys dress up as krishna while girls dress up as radha. Krishna is believed to have loved butter. He would often create a human pyramid to get his hands on the delicious butter made by his mother Yashoda which was beyond his reach. The ritual is converted into a game in the present day.

On Janmashtami 2019, here are some lesser known things about Lord Krishna

Pandavas' mother kunti happened to be Krishna's father vasudeva's sister. So Kunti was Krishna's aunt. Hence there's a theory that says that Krishna actually belonged to the pandavas.

Krishna was dark in color which is why he is often shown in blue color in cartoons and books. But guess what? Krishna itself means dark, a reason why the other half of lunar calendar is called the Krishna Paksha.

Remember Eklavya? Yes, the same disciple who offered his thumb as gurudakshnia to Dronacharya. Eklavya was Krishna's cousin.

Lord krishna has several names and gopikas. It is a known fact that every Hindu god has thousands of names which are chanted during sahasranamam. But Krishna not only had so many names but also had thousands of Gopikas who would give their life for him.

It is a known fact that Gandhari's 100 sons died in the Kurukshetra war between Kauravas and Pandavas. So it is said that when Krishna went to offer Gandhari his condolence, she cursed him and his clan to perish without anyone ascending the throne. And so it is being said that it was Gandhari's curse which killed Krishna.

Talking of Gopikas, the one name that comes to mind when one talks of Krishna's favourite woman is Radha. Even though Krishna's wives Rukmini and Satyabhama find mention in the scriptures, Krishna's consort Radha is rarely talked about.
