52 Places To Go In 2019 Features Hampi in Karnataka

New York: The New York Times has featured Hampi as the second best place to go, in its latest ‘52 Places To Go In 2019’ List. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located near Hospet town of Karnataka and is the only place from India to be featured in the list.

Hampi is a small village and temple town located in North Karnataka and of late has become a favourite amongst foreign visitors to India. At its prime, Hampi was one of the largest and richest cities in the world during the Vijayanagara Empire and traded with Persia and Portugal.

It housed many stunning monuments and also functioned as a world centre for ruby and diamond trade. Over time many of these ruins still stand today and in 1986, Hampi was officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

With its beautiful temples, palaces ruins, stables,its ancient market streets, the Tungabhadra river and its majestic boulders, makes Hampi a must-go-to place in a travelers list.

Anegundi, Hampi

Another attraction recently started for foreigners is the "hippie” side of Hampi, at  Anegundi, for which you need to cross the river to get there. The locals have set up many eateries with different cuisines  including Israeli, Turkish, Russian and British fares  to attract the tourists.

The Caribbean Island of Puerto Rico was the topper in the list, which the New York Times describes  as ‘An island on its way back’.
