Narendra Modi, Shashi Tharoor and Raghuram G Rajan make it to the Popular shortlist of the 16th Raymond Crossword Book awards.

It's BJP versus Congress at the Popular shortlist of the 16th Raymond Crossword Book Award.

True blue denizens of the Indian literature diaspora continue to be front runners in the Popular shortlist of the 16th Raymond Crossword Book awards (RCBA).

Names such as Arundhati Roy, Ruskin Bond, Amish Tripathi, Devdutt Pattanaik, Ravi Subramanian are in the running, with the much loved Sudha Murthy leading the nominations for three different titles.

The popular category at the Raymond Crossword Book Awards comprises awards in 5 categories, which includes best fiction, biography, non-fiction, Business & Management, Health & Fiction and children’s Writing.

“ The popular award winners for all the categories are traditionally selected through online voting,” added Maulik Desai, head of Crossword Bookstores.

Penguin Random House leads with 15 nominations, among 30 nominees for the Popular Choice awards. Westland. Aleph, Jaico, Aatman Innovations, Juggernaut, Speaking Tiger, Harper Collins and Hachette also figure in the nominations.

The Raymond Crossword Book Award also has a Jury Category comprising best fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and translations. In addition to this, a Lifetime Achievement Award will also be announced, which was launched for the first time in 2016. A total of 11 awards will be given on December 20th, 2018.

The Raymond Crossword Book Award, India’s first and most prestigious Book Award, recognises and rewards the best of Indian writing & Indian authors. Incepted in 1998, over the years, the awards have been equated to the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, The Pulitzer and The Booker, and are a definitive, veritable platform for Indian Authors.

The very best of Indian writing in English has been honoured with the Raymond Crossword Book Award, including names such as Salman Rushdie, Vikram Seth, Amitav Ghosh, Neel Mukherjee and Kiran Desai are among past winners of the award; thereby raising the bar for its esteem and reverence.

Awards are given in the following categories-

a. Jury Category comprising best fiction, non-fiction, children’s books and translations.

b. Popular category comprising best fiction, non-fiction, biography, business & management, health & fitness, children’s Writing

In 2016, for the first time, Raymond Crossword Book Award introduced the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was conferred upon Ruskin Bond by the legend Gulzar.

The awardees, sometimes discovered by the Award itself, have invariably risen to stature in the world of literature; making the Crossword Book Award a definitive barometer for excellence in Indian writing in English.
