Hyderabad: The digging operation was going for 18 hours with a hope to rescue the 18-month-old girl who slipped into a 40-ft deep borewell at Ikkareddyguda near Chevella in Ranga Reddy district.

Meena, daughter of Yadagiri and Renuka of Yalala who migrated to Chevella some time back, fell into the borewell which was abandoned by a farmer in his land. The girl was playing along with her sister Akshita who informed her parents and then the entire village came together to rescue the toddler.

Police and firefighters immediately started digging a parallel hole but it was taking a lot of time as the land is rocky. The operation went on throughout the night and continued till this afternoon.

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team arrived at the spot and conducting the rescue operation with most advanced equipment. The team is deploying robotic handcliffs to get the girl out of the borewell hole.

Transport Minister P. Mahender Reddy and several top officials are camping at the site to oversee the rescue operation. The Minister said the child was alive and her cries were heard in the morning. "All steps are being taken to rescue the girl safely. It may take a few more hours," he said.
