Denmark Gears Up To Ban Burqa

Denmark is gearing up to ban the burqa and the niqab, sported by Muslim women in what appears to be a significant move in European politics. In June this year, the Norwegian government put forth a proposal to ban face-covering veils in schools and universities. Denmark’s decision appeared to enjoy widespread support in parliament. The Liberal Party, the largest in the coalition government, decided to support the move backed by the Danish People's Party and the opposition Social Democrats as well. The mode and method of enforcement of the ban is likely to be the next step in this direction.

The burqa and niqab are among the most controversial issues in Europe. While some argue that face-covering veils symbolize the enslavement of women, there are others who are equally vocal about religious freedom and cultural practices. Then there are others who say that the burqa and niqab do not represent European culture and have no place in Europe.

The Liberal Alliance had for a long time argued vociferously that a ban on the burqa was tantamount to restricting people’s choice of attire. However, it now finds itself in agreement with the other parties of the coalition, the Conservatives and the Liberals. Denmark’s largest party, the Social Democrats also came forward to back the measure. Their leader, Mette Fredriksen, clearly indicated as much in parliament on Thursday.
