Koraput: Turned away by hospital staff at Koraput in Odisha on Friday, a woman
gave birth to a baby girl in an abandoned drain.

According to reports, the 30-year-old tribal woman was identified as Daina Mudali. A native of Janiguda village in the district, the woman had actually come to see her husband Raghu Mudali who was admitted in Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital following ill-health. After sometime, she began developing labour pains around 8 am in the morning. Her mother and sister, who accompanied her, took her to gynaecology ward for tests. As her family failed to produce the required medical documents, the hospital authorities denied her admission.

Subsequently, she came out of the hospital and got into a 2.5-foot abandoned drain near the hospital for privacy. Within minutes, she delivered a baby girl. Even after delivering the baby, she was unattended by the apathetic staff and had to wait for an hour to get into the hospital. The baby was shifted to special neo-natal care unit and her mother to the general ward where their condition is stated to be stable.

Meanwhile, Koraput District Medical Officer Lalit Mohan Rath denied allegations that the staff refused to admit her. He said that it was a case of instant delivery as she went to attend nature's call.
