Delhi assembly polls on Feb 7, code comes into effect

Delhi will vote to elect a new assembly February 7, a year after the AAP government resigned after 49 days in power, and the votes will be counted February 10.

Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath said the last date for nomination of candidates will be January 21 and they could withdraw from the contest by January 24. Over 1.30 crore voters in 70 constituencies will exercise their franchise in Delhi Assembly polls.

Delhi elected a hung assembly in December 2013 after which the Aam Aadmi Party formed a minority government headed by Arvind Kejriwal with the Congress backing. Kejriwal resigned February 14, 2014.

Various political parties have already begun their campaign in the national capital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a massive rally in the Ramlila Maidan on Saturday. If his speech is any indication, the BJP considers the AAP as its main rival in the forthcoming elections. "We need development here, not anarchy. They are good at dharnas... we are good at running government," Modi said.
The BJP does not have a chief ministerial candidate this time around. The Congress has already announced former Union Minister Ajay Maken as its face for the polls.
The Congress welcomed the poll schedule announcement. The CWC will meet on Tuesday to finetune the party strategy.
AAP too said that it would trounce the BJP. "In 1985, Hegde had reversed Lok Sabha verdict within a few months in Karnataka Assembly. AAP is all set to repeat history in Delhi on Feb 10," tweeted AAP's Yogendra Yadav.
