The story of Malaysian tycoon Khoo Kay Peng's daughter, Angeline Francis Khoo, appears no less than a film. Angeline renounced her share of property to marry the man, her father disapproved. Her father is the chairman of Malayan United Industries, an investment holding firm with substantial stakes in lifestyle brand Laura Ashley UK and the Corus group of luxury hotels.

She met Caribbean-born data scientist Jedidiah Francis in 2008, while she was studying in Oxford University and married him. Angeline currently stays in London and is a fashion designer. She says, "I believed dad's stance was wrong, so there was no question about what was right. I've been fortunate to have that perspective: you can have money and it's a blessing; it allows you to do things and gives you options, but there are also things that come with it, such as control.”

For eight years, she never claimed her father's wealth. Her opinion was criticized by a section of netizens, who trolled her that she doesn’t know her father’s net worth. To this she asserts, "Surely, on a scale of things you should care about where your parents are concerned, how much money they have is not relevant."

The 34-year-old was dragged in the bitter legal battle for divorce of her parents who were married for 43 years. She hopes that her father would "let go of his anger and his hurt", so they can again have a cordial relationship.

She further says that “I was disowned 9 years ago when I first got married and mum and dad started divorce proceedings 4 years later.”
