‘Naxal Couple’ Held Under UAPA For Maoist Links In Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A couple residing in Hyderabad were arrested under the dreadful Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Indian Penal Code for alleged links with the CPI (Maoist).

Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said that the N Ravi Sharma and his wife, both in their mid-50s were arrested for being associated with Maoist activities in Telangana since June 2019.

Based on inputs, a special police team searched their house in LB Nagar here in Mansoorabad and seized Maoist literature, three laptops, pen drives and memory cards and correspondence with the banned CPI (Maoist).

A case was registered against them under relevant IPC sections and UAPA and Telangana State Public Security Act, 2012.

Police said that Sharma had earlier worked with the people's war group (PWG) in different posts. He was arrested in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand in October 2009 and released on bail in April 2016.

After his release from jail, he came to Hyderabad and had been residing at a house here along with his wife, a former CPI (Maoist) state committee member.

He was actively involved in the formation of 'All India Forum against Hindutwa Fascist Offensive' in February 2019 at Delhi, Bhagwat said.

Sharma was frequently going underground for long periods and taking part in meetings of top Maoists in Chhattisgarh and other parts of the country, he added.
