Hyderabad: A London based professor reportedly ended his life by jumping in front of an incoming train near Ghatkesar in Hyderabad after being booked in a case for his wife's suicide in Andhra Pradesh.

Prof.M.Ganagaiah, 32, and his wife S.Ramadevi, 27, were natives of Martur Mandal in Prakasam district of AP and married about three years ago after courtship. The couple pursued post-graduation in science and were working in Saudi Arabia.

About 18 months ago, Ramadevi got pregnant and returned to her maternal home. She delivered a girl nine months ago. A year ago, Gangaiah shifted to London as a professor.

Martur police said that his wife committed suicide on August 29.“Gangaiah came to India about a month ago to see his wife and daughter. During his stay at Martur, he reportedly pressurized his wife to continue her studies and do her Ph.D. for better opportunities. Ramadevi was not keen and they had a fight over the matter,” said GRP Inspector K. Adi Reddy.

After meeting his wife and daughter, Gangaiah returned to London on August 29, the day Ramadevi committed suicide. When he heard of her death, he took a flight back to Hyderabad and reached very next day to Hyderabad. He booked a ticket to Martur but his body was found on the railway tracks on the night of August 31.

“A case was registered against the professor at Martur police station under IPC Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 498 (detaining with criminal intent, a married woman), following a complaint from his wife’s relatives that he was responsible for her death. We feel that on learning about this he went into depression and took the extreme step,” said inspector Adi Reddy. He also said that police is investigating the main reason behind his death and how he reached Ghatkesar.
