Guntur: A Second Additional District Court in-charge Judge, L Sridhar, sentenced a couple to life imprisonment and served a fine of Rs 2,000 in a case related to honour killing on Wednesday.

As per reports, the couple in question Pachhala Haribabu and Samrajyam were residing in 2nd line in Rajendranagar, Peddanandipadu of Gogulamudi village in Guntur district. They had two daughters Deepthi (26) and Shruti. Deepthi was working as a software engineer at HCL in Hyderabad. She fell in love with Anantapalli Kirankumar of Rajaomangi village in West Godavari district who worked in the same company. As he belonged to another caste and worried about parental opposition, they decided to get married secretly.

On March 21, 2014, Deepthi and Kiran got married in the Arya Samaj at Hyderabad. On learning that Deepthi and Kiran had married against their wishes, the parents planned to eliminate her. They went to Hyderabad on the 22nd and met the couple.

Accordingly, Hari Babu and Samrajyam brought the newly-weds to Guntur assuring them of arranging a reception. They convinced Deepthi to accompany them home alone on the pretext of performing a pooja. They made Kiran Kumar stay in a hotel and took their daughter home. After taking her home, they tied her to a cot and as Samrajyam caught hold of Deepthi’s hands, Hari Babu strangled her with the ‘chunni’. The murder became known after Deepthi’s husband Kiran Kumar went to their home. They were later caught by the police and confessed to killing their daughter.
