Speeding SRS Travels Bus Rams Into MUV Near Veldurthi

Kurnool: In a ghastly accident that took place on the National Highway at Veldurthi Cross Roads in Kurnool district 13 people travelling in an MUV (Tata Toofan) and two on a motorcycle were killed on the spot. The victims of Toofan are identified as residents of Ramapuram village in Vaddepally mandal of Gadwal district in Telangana and the two other are from Veldurthi.

In an attempt to avoid a collision with a motorcycle, the driver of an SRS travels bus rammed into a Tata Toofan coming in the opposite direction across the road divider. In the process, the Volvo hit both the motorcycle and also the Toofan on the other side of the road. The impact of the collision was such that the Toofan got trapped into the front portion of the bus while the bodies of the passengers flung into the air and fell scattered at distance. Passengers in the bus also were injured due to the resulting sudden and heavy jerk from the collision. Passersby who came to the rescue had a tough time to bring out the bodies stuck in the mangled vehicle.

It is learnt that the victims were returning home after attending a function in Gunthakal in Kurnool. The bus was travelling from Hyderabad to Mangalore in Karnataka when the incident happened.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and YSR Congress chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed shock over the incident and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved.

Corrigendum: There were reports that the vehicle involved in the accident was a Volvo bus. But the company has released an official statement stating that the vehicle was not manufactured by Volvo.
