Tenali Rural/ Guntur: A shocking case of chain snatching by an elderly woman came to light in Tenali at Guntur district. Seventy-one year old Javangula Sarojini from Sattenapalli was caught by the Tenali police for stealing gold chains worth Rs 2.10 lakhs from elderly women in a temple in the month of March.

The Tenali Two Town Circle CI RS Kishore Kumar conducted a press meet on Sunday and gave details about how the crime was committed.

J Sarojini used to regularly visit her son who lived Ranga Colony in Tenali. On March 13 she had gone for a temple inauguration in Nandulapeta. She got friendly with a few old women who had come for the function. While talking to them she managed to hoodwink two of them, K Annapurna (65) and P Sugunakumari (63) and stole their gold chains. After realising that they were robbed, they filed a complaint with the Tenali Two-Town Police. The woman was careful enough to not come under the CC camera scanner and the Police after examining the CCTV footage found nothing suspicious.

They later got to know that some people had taken videos of the ceremony using their mobiles. After examining the videos, they tool screen grabs of the accused. The two victims confirmed this, that it was she who had spoken to them and even covered them with their saris in a bid to warn them of thieves in the area.

The police apprehended Sarojini on Saturday near the washers colony lake and took her into custody. Upon interrogation, she confessed to her crime and police recovered more than 72 grams worth of gold chains from her. They came to know that she had committed similar offences in different temples in Vijayawada. SI Gannavarapu Anjaiah was also present in the meet held on Sunday.
