Tirupati:Two months after the crown theft from the Govindaraja Swamy temple in Tirupati, the Urban District Police has finally got a breakthrough into the case. In connection to the theft, a man, identified as Akash Pratap Sarode, has been arrested in Mumbai on Monday.
On February 2, three golden crowns weighing 1,351 grams and worth approximately Rs 50 lakh were stolen in broad daylight from the Tirupati temple.
Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) which administer the temple was left reeling in shock over the theft. A search operation was launched all across the country by the police to nab the burglars.
The Mumbai police on Monday arrested Akash, a native of Nanded district in Maharashtra, at Dadar police station. Having confessed to committing the crime, Sarode also admitted to pledging the three stolen crowns for Rs 3 lakh to a local jeweller, who was also taken into custody by the police. At present, the police are trying to retrieve the crowns and are investigating whether the accused had any local support to carry out the theft.
Meanwhile, Sarode has been shifted to Tirupati for further questioning.
