Vijayawada: City police have registered 224 violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and seized Rs 2.1 crore of unaccounted cash across the commissionerate limits from March 10 to April 2. Additionally, Rs 70 lakh worth of liquor have also been confiscated.

Vijayawada police commissioner Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that some amount of the cash has been returned after people showed the required income proof and also after the Income Tax department issued no objection for certain funds.

It might be noted that just a day after the MCC came into place, police confiscated Rs 91 lakh during one vehicle check. Police also seized unaccounted cash from several checkpoints across the city.

Not just cash, freebies like cycles, sweet boxes, T-shirts and other goodies have also been seized.

Police said that they have also booked cases against political leaders under section 188 of IPC (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) who were distributing cash to people to attend their rallies. However, the names of the politicians were not disclosed.

Other violations include posting content on social media platforms and also messaging people in bulk.
