Minor Dials Child Helpline To Escape Marriage

Hyderabad: A 15-year-old called the child helpline to stop her own wedding recently in Hyderabad. She was to marry a 21-year-old on Friday. The student who is still in school was appearing for the class 10th exam and was supposed to write her last exam on the day of her wedding. She was barred from writing the exam as they wanted to get her married.

The wedding was to take place at 11:20 am, and she called the child helpline at 9 am. The helpline authorities arrived within an hour and stopped the wedding.

Child welfare authorities and SHE team officials from Rachakonda police also rushed to the spot.

Achyuta Rao, a local child rights activist, told a local news website, “We quickly alerted the police and were able to rescue her. She told us that she is interested in studying but her parents were against it.”

Nacharam Inspector M Mahesh said in the preliminary investigation, there was confusion on whether the girl was a minor or not as her parents had produced her Adhaar card which showed that she was 18 years. However, on checking her school records and other related documents, it was found that the girl was a minor.

The girl's parents were produced before the Mandal Revenue Officer, Uppal, and were booked under 107 CrPC (a section which acts as a deterrent against repeating the crime).

“The girl’s parents claimed that they were having health issues and wanted to get her married before they die,” Mahesh said.

The victim has been sent to a shelter home.
