Thiruvananthapuram: With Kerala yet to come to terms with the shock of the news of a boy being assaulted by his mother’s live-in partner, who is fighting for his life at a hospital, new reports of a similar incident has emerged where a woman was starved to death by her husband and her in-laws for more dowry.
Tushara, the 27-year-old woman, was starved by her husband Chandu Lal and mother-in-law Geetha Lal. Tushara weighed a mere 20 Kgs when she died on March 21.
The incident has been reported from Oyur in Kollam district in south Kerala. It was reported by the local media that many rituals used to be performed in the Lal household and it was covered from all sides in tall thin sheets.
Tushara’s mother alleged that they only allowed three meetings with her daughter over the past six years. It has been more than a year and a half since the mother last saw Tushara
Tushara was fed only sugared water in her final days, said the initial reports. The fact that her body weighed only 20 Kgs during her final days led to suspicion and an investigation by the police. Both Geetha and Chandu Lal have been taken into custody and are being grilled.
Tushara’s mother had refrained from taking the issue to the police to avoid problems and harassment for her daughter from the Lals. People who heard of this took to social media to express their shock at the news of this tragedy.
“Has Kerala become a place that is home to all kinds of cruelty?” asked one, while another commented “Kerala seems to be turning into a mental asylum”.
