An unmarried 26-year-old full-term pregnant woman attempted a self-delivery at her rented house in Gorakhpur while watching a video of childbirth on YouTube. Both the woman and her newborn died in the process.

The incident took place in Bilandpur area, under Cantonment police station, on Sunday night said station officer Ravi Rai. He also added that the possible reason for attempted self-delivery was because of her fear of society, of being an unmarried mother.

The matter came to light when her neighbours found blood flowing out of her room on Monday morning.

“Her landlord Ravi Upadhyay broke open the door and found the woman and a newborn baby boy lying dead. He immediately informed the police, who reached the site and sent the body for post-mortem. Her smartphone revealed that she was watching ‘how to deliver a baby by self’ and other similar safe delivery processes on YouTube,” Rai said.

A scissors, a blade and some thread were found near the woman’s body, said the SHO.

The woman is a Native of Bahraich. She had taken the house on rent just four days before the incident. Her relatives were informed about the incident, who confirmed that she was unmarried.

Her landlord said: “The woman approached me just four days back and told me that her mother would be coming soon to assist her in delivery at a hospital. After verifying her details through Aadhaar card, I rented the room to her.”

The family was given her body after post mortem and no FIR was filed against anybody.
