Hyderabad: In one of the rarest of rare cases, the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad sentenced a visually-challenged woman to seven years in prison for killing her two daughters and for attempting suicide.

The accused Dhudapaka Haritha, a native of Warangal and her two daughters were deserted by her husband a few years ago. Since then, it has become difficult for Haritha to make both ends meet.

Few months after the incident, her children kept her questioning about heir father. Seeing her daughters deprived of father's love and care, she had slipped into depression. Subsequently, she devised a plan to kill herself due to the ordeal she has been facing. Initially, she strangled her two kids to death and attempted suicide.

On charges of murder, the Warangal fast track court sentenced her to seven year jail in 2010. Later, she had appealed to the High Court challenging the lower court's order.

The High Court bench observed that accused Haritha had killed her daughters in the heat of the moment, but not a deliberate attempt. The bench comprising Justice CV Nagarjuna Reddy and Justice J Umadevi on Saturday announced the judgement stating that Haritha is convicted under IPC Section 304 Part-A and should undergo seven years imprisonment.
