Vijayawada: The state government is destroying precious ecosystem with utter disregard to environmental laws, noted water conservationist Rajendra Singh said.

Addressing a round table meet here on Monday, he said construction activity for the capital city of Amravati is being carried out in low lying areas, catchment regions and floodplains of the river Krishna. "This is effectively destroy the ecology of the region," he said. He also criticised the Central government for permitting Andhra Pradesh to take up construction in these regions.

"A report with misleading facts and figures was submitted to the Union government to secure permission for development of the region," Rajendra Singh also called the 'waterman of India' alleged in his statement. Stating that the river problem is every citizen's issue, he called on the people to actively participate in the protest over construction on river plains, which would be organised from Amaravati to Bijapur from August 1 to 15. The protest would cover all the rivers and its tributaries.
