Constable sacked for abducting senior officer

The Andhra Pradesh Police on Friday dismissed head constable Giriprasad Sarma, who had taken a senior police officer captive last month to protest alleged harassment.

Sarma had been suspended after the incident. Today he was removed from service under the Constitutional provisions (of Article 311), official sources said.

On the evening of September 12, Sarma held Superintendent of Police of Police Transport Organisation E Lakshmi Narayana captive at a lodge here for nearly four hours. Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy, through a telephone conversation, finally persuaded Sarma to release the SP.

Sarma told a TV channel during the episode that he was being harassed by superior officers.

Next day, Narayana lodged a complaint with the Saifabad police here, who registered a case against Sarma for kidnapping.

Apart from the charge of kidnapping the SP, there were also some proved allegations against Sarma, sources said.
