Prakasam: A youth attempted to rape his girlfriend at the outskirts of Kanigiri town in Prakasam district. Although the incident happened a week ago, it came to light on Tuesday when the video shot by the youth's friends surfaced on WhatsApp and Facebook.

According to the police, the accused, who is identified as Karthik, is a college dropout. He was said to be a good friend of the victim for the past few months. Karthik along with his male friends - Sai and Pawan - planned a picnic tour to Kanigiri town, 60 kms from the district headquarters, a week ago. The victim was accompanied by a female friend to the picnic spot. Later, all the five members ventured into the fields. At that moment, the accused asked Sai to make fun of his girlfriend. Then, Sai caught the victim and groped her.

As she tried to resist Sai, Karthik shot the video on his mobile phone. The victim screamed and begged him to leave her as he continued to grope her. Another female friend too pleaded not to misbehave with her. Later, the video was posted on social networking sites - WhatsApp, Facebook.

Following a complaint lodged by the parents of the victim, the police arrested Karthik and his two male friends — Sai and Pawan. It is learnt that Karthik had promised the victim of marrying her. A case has been registered against the accused under 366, 354 Section of IPC and sent them in remand.
