Class 9 Student Drowns In Bathukamma Ghat

Hyderabad: Vikas (14), a Class 9 student, died on Sunday after getting drowned at Bathukamma Ghat on Necklace Road.

The victim along with his four friends went to the Ghat, while three of his friends stood at the tank, Ganesh and Vikas went into the lake in order to swim. As the boys were not aware of the depth, thinking it to be shallow went ahead and then slipped into the water.

The locals who heard boys scream rushed to their rescue and pulled out Ganesh and Vikas, but Ganesh survived while Vikas who was taken to KIMS hospital was declared dead by the doctors.

Ramgopalpet sub-inspector V. Saidulu said, "As boys were scared that they will be blamed for his death, they said the victims accidentally fell while taking selfies. The boys didn't inform their respective family about their plan."

Locals said that the lake holds up water 10-feet deep which was used for Bathukamma immersion. Following the tragic incident, GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that they will fence the entire area to stop people from entering the ghat till next Bathukamma festival season.

Vikas is a student of Gujarati High School at Ranigunj and his father M. Raju is an auto rickshaw driver. A case under section 174 (suspicious death) of the CrPC has been registered and the body has been sent for post-mortem.
