Cheddi Gang Creates Panic In Eluru After Failed Robbery Bid

Eluru: After creating a ruckus in Eluru, the Cheddi Gang failed to rob a house on Thursday mid-night. No casualties were reported  in the incident, when a gang of 6 members attacked a businessman's house in the town. The gang tried to break into the house for 45 minutes, during which time the inmates desperately tried to inform the police through the 100 emergency phone number. It is learnt that the local police did not respond on time. They also failed to reach the spot even till Friday morning, it is learned.

According to the police, the Cheddi Gang was unsuccessful in their robbery attempt on Thursday. The incident took place on Road No. 8, Shanti Nagar. The house is owned by Deverapalli Satyanarayana, an advocate, and is rented by Sarella Rama Krishna, a businessman in the local fish market. It is learnt that Ramakrishhna has installed CC cameras around his house. When Ramakrishna heard the sounds at around 1 am on Friday morning, he checked the CC cameras, which showed a gang of 6 people, who wore shorts and covered their faces with towels. They carried knives, rods and other weapons.

Sensing danger, Ramakrishna immediately called the 100 police service. But the state call centre did not inform the district call centre promptly. Even though Ramakrishna  tried the local police, they did not respond on time. Even as Ramakrishna was trying to inform the police, the gang were making repeated attempts to enter the house for almost 45 minutes. A scared Ramakrishna called the house owner Satyanarayana and his friends to inform the matter. After they switched on the lights in the balcony, the gang fled the scene by climbing over the compound wall of the house.
After the gang escaped, the local police enquired about the incident and imposed police personnel on patrolling. Although the appearance of the culprits pointed to the infamous Cheddi gang, local police believe that it was the Sholapur gang which attempted the robbery. They are currently investigating to find out if it was the Cheddi gang or the Sholapur gang.

On Thursday night, Ramakrishna came back home late. When he was just about to go to bed, he heard some sounds from outside the house. Fortunately, he could save himself and his family using the CC camera footage. He is wondering if he would have been spared had he slept earlier or had he not set up the CCTV cameras.
The gang entered the house through the compound wall behind the house. They blocked the backyard door by tightly tying up a bicycle using a rope. Later, the four members of the gang tried to break open the front door, while the other two guarded the spot. Since the door was difficult to break in and heavy sounds erupted, the gang left the place, it is believed.

About three years back, a similar gang of six members from Sholapur, Maharashtra stole 50 gold coins from a jewellery shop near Bheemadolu in the city. The police reportedly informed that the gang also sported shorts and banians, similar to the Cheddi Gang. Recently, a similar gang attacked a house near Nellore, where they killed the house owner's grand daughter and severely injured two people.
Speaking to media, Eluru DSP K. Eshwara Rao assured the safety of people in the town.

"The residents do not have to fear. We are taking strict action to avoid all kinds of untoward incidents. The police department is strengthening intelligence over night incidents. The recent robbery attempt in Eluru was not done by the Cheddi Gang. We firmly believe that it is the Sholapur gang which tried. As per the complaint raised by the victim Ramakrishna, we have filed a case on the matter. We are conducting a full-fledged investigation to chase the gang," he said.
