Six chain snatchers arrested; stolen gold ornaments recovered

Hyderabad: Six members of two inter-state gangs were arrested by the police on Friday after which 1 kg of stolen gold ornaments and three bikes were seized, a police official said.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy said that a police team nabbed Mohammed Rasheed Khan, Mohammed Sayeed Ali, Shaikh Arshad Ali, Afroz Khan besides Mir Ayan Ali and Syed Ahmed Ali, who were allegedly behind 30 chain snatching cases in the limits of Hyderabad and Cyberabad commissionerates as well as Medak district.

The accused Rasheed, Mohammed Sayeed, Shaikh Arshad and Afroz Khan (of the first gang) are relatives residing in Aurangabad and Hyderabad, the police official said. They used 150 cc and 180 cc bikes to snatch necklaces of women walking in lanes and bylanes of isolated places, the police official said.

After committing offences they used to go to Aurangabad in Maharashtra. They used to return to Hyderabad and commit similar offences again. So far they have been involved in 19 chain snatching cases, the police official said.

The second gang's prime accused Mir Ayan Ali, who is a native of Maharashtra, met another accused Syed Ahmed Ali in a jail here and hatched a plan to snatch gold necklaces, the police official said. Repeated offenders involved in a large number of chain snatching cases are booked under the stringent PD Act, the police official said.
