CCTV Footage Exposes Foul Play By Bank Officials

Pune: Days after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed banks to preserve CCTV footage, Income Tax department officials seized Rs 10.80 crore unaccounted cash from a bank here following the investigation of the bank's video footage.

During the investigations, the IT found that 15 lockers were assigned to the same person during the month of August. Two of those lockers were accessed over 12 times during November and December after the announcement of demonetisation. Further probe revealed that the 15 lockers contained Rs 10.80 crore of unaccounted currency.

The RBI, had earlier directed all banks to preserve CCTV footage belonging to November and December.

The bank's CCTV footage also revealed that a person was carrying huge bags in and out of the banks. This was repeated several times and each time officials of the bank hurriedly accompanied the unidentified person. The IT officials took possession of the Rs 10.80 crore and sealed the bank lockers pending investigation. Interestingly, of the Rs 10.80 crore Rs 8.8 crore were in new currency denomination.
