It’s learnt that 42 engineering colleges have been put in the list of pending for affiliation for 2016-17 academic year.

Hyderabad: Highlighting the alarming situation in quality standards of private engineering colleges, prestigious institutions such as Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology (CBIT) and Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology (MGIT) are also figured in the list of private engineering colleges that have been denied university affiliation. Affiliation of CBIT and MGIT is also said to be pending for final approval. It’s learnt that overall 42 engineering colleges including CBIT and MGIT have been put in the list of pending for affiliation for this 2016-17 academic year, according to media reports.

Several private engineering colleges in Telangana seem to be in favor of moving court over their affiliations, which have been put on hold. If the eligibility criteria for engineering colleges lands in Court, then it’ll affect entire process of EAMCET conducted for Telangana, according to some academic experts. The stringent eligibility criterion for engineering colleges may trip number of private engineering colleges from 284 to 174. An official list of eligible engineering colleges is expected to be announced in a day or two. After a series of inspections, the State Vigilance Department has identified several loopholes in the maintenance of engineering college standards. Some colleges lack infrastructure and some lack faculty and labs.

Vigilance department says 26 colleges lack infrastructure, while JNTU lists 18 colleges, which fall below the standards.

Adding to the woes, there’s wide gap between Vigilance Department’s report and JNTU’s observations. Vigilance department says 26 colleges lack infrastructure, while JNTU lists 18 colleges, which fall below the standards. Based on inspections carried out by Vigilance Department and JNTU, about 174 engineering colleges have been selected for affiliation.

Reports of JNTU and Vigilance Department differ on 44 colleges as the technology university says 18 colleges were not upto the mark, while latter lists of 26 colleges, which are unfit for affiliation. On the other hand, 24 more engineering colleges become ineligible by both the JNTU and Vigilance Department, while 42 engineering colleges have not applied for affiliation. This situation leaves the scope for 174 engineering colleges for this academic year.

If the number of colleges is 174 from 284 in 2015-16 after the inspections, the drop in seats is estimated to be over 50,000 for 2016-17 academic year.

During 2015-16 academic year, 284 private engineering colleges with 1,26,468 seats were operational in Telangana state. If the number of colleges is 174 after the inspections, the drop in seats is estimated to be over 50,000 for 2016-17 academic year. However, students need not worry over this, assure academic experts, while saying over 50 percent seats were not filled every year. More than one lakh students become eligible in EAMCET, but only 40,000-50,000 students only taking admissions.
