The greatness of Khayyam lay in the minimalist approach he had to his musical compositions. Here are a few melodies from the master craftsman's work.

The film, Kabhie Kabhie (1976) brought Khayyam on to the centrestage, with Sahir Ludhianvi's stirrring poetry as exemplified in the title song, a modified version of one of Sahir's celebrated nazms or poems...

"Umrao Jaan" (1981) is another milestone in the later part of Khayyam's career. All the songs in the film, such as "in aankhon ki masti mein", were runaway hits..

The film, "Bazaar" (1982) was another brilliant musical success, as borne by out by this ghazal from the great Urdu poet, Meer Taqi Meer's work, set to a modern tune by Khayyam, to the accompaniment of drums for percussion.

The song, composed by the maestro "tum apna ranj-o-Gham apni pareshani mujhe de do", penned by the great Sahir Ludhianvi was sung by his wife Jagjit Kaur. It was from the 1964 movie, Shagun....

"Woh subah kabhi ta aayegi", the unforgettable song hailing a new dawn, with minimalistic background music, so typical of Khayyam, from "Phir Subah Hogi", is among his top compositions...

The melodious duet from "Shola Aur Shabnam", written by the great Kaifi Azmi and sung by Mohd. Rafi, "jeet hi lenge baazi hum tum", remains among his classics, as is the solo number from the film sung by Mohd. Rafi, "jaane kya dhoondhti rehti hain yeh aankhen mujh mein."

Another classic from the maestro's repertoire is "baharo, mera jeevan bhi sanwaro", written by Kaifi Azmi, from the 1967 movie, 'Aakhri Khat'...
