Biggest IPL Records In Last Ten Years

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen a number of great individual performances as well as team victories. With the addition of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2018, the contest for the trophy is going to get even more exciting this season. CSK, two time trophy winners, alongside Kolkata Knight Riders would like to equal Mumbai Indians’ record of three trophies.

The annual sports event gave a platform to many match winners over the past decade, with the likes of Suresh Raina and Chris Gayle in batting, Malinga and Bhuvneshwar in the bowling department, and all-rounders like Keiron Pollard and Ravindra Jadeja. Let us look at some of the records, which include team and individual performances.

Most Runs Scored

CSK batsman Suresh Raina can be called a T20 legend, with the number of runs he has scored in IPL and international T20s. Raina, who featured in the most number of IPL matches, is also the highest run getter in competition. The left-handed batsman scored a mammoth 4,540 runs in 161 matches at an extra-ordinary average of 139. Last season, RCB captain Virat Kohli briefly held the position of the highest run scorer. However, Raina surpassed Kohli later in last year’s IPL.

Most Wickets Taken

Retired bowler Lasith Malinga has been highly influential in Mumbai Indians’ three IPL Trophy wins. The Sri Lankan holds the record for the highest wickets taken in the history of IPL. Malinga, who had an unorthodox bowling action, picked 154 wickets at an average of 19. In his long IPL career of 110 matches, Malinga’s 5 for 13 is his best bowling figures. Malinga also won the Champions League trophy on two ocassions with Mumbai Indians.

Most Sixes Hit

West Indies batsman Chris Gayle holds the record for the most sixes in the IPL. The left-handed monstrous hitter smashed a total of 265 sixes in just 100 innings over 10 seasons. He is followed by Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma at second and third places respectively, with 173 and 172 sixes each.

Although Gayle hit many of the longest sixes in the history of IPL, South African Allrounder Albie Morkel’s unbelievable record of a 125 metre six, hit back in 2008, is yet to be broken. Morkel rocketed the ball in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League to achieve the feat.

Chris Gayle also holds the record for the highest individual score in IPL. In 2013, the West Indian played a sensational innings of 175* off 66 balls against Pune Warriors.

Best Bowling Figures

Sohail Tanvir recorded by far the best bowling figures in the first season of IPL. In a match against the Chennai Super Kings, the Pakistani bowler took 6 wickets for just 14 runs. Rajasthan Royals won the match by 8 wickets, thanks to Tanvir’s efforts.

Win By Highest Margin

In the inaugural match of the inaugural season of the IPL, the Kolkata Knight Riders pulled out a storm, when Brendon McCullum played a blistering innings with 158 runs from just 73 balls. KKR defeated Royal Challengers by 140 runs, to make it the all-time worst defeat till now.

Highest Run Chase

Shane Warne led-Rajasthan Royals chased a huge target of 217 runs against Deccan Chargers in 2008. This is still the highest run chase in the history of IPL.
