Bengaluru: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to ban some of the pet dog breeds from apartments. The BBMP has released draft guidelines on pet dogs. According to these guidelines Great Dane, English Mastiff, Bulldog, Boxer, Rottweiler, St Bernard, German Shepherd and Golden Retriever could be banned from apartments.

It will now be mandatory for the people to acquire a licence for their pets and ensure that their pets are sterilised. Owners will not be allowed to have more than one mid-size dog per flat. In case, If it is an independent home, three dogs would be allowed.

Penalty will be imposed on the owners of the pets, if they don't clean up the public places, where their pets go for urination.

However, animal rights activists have held that the civic body should have been more strict with breeders who sell dogs that should not be kept as pets in the city. Activists have said that the city had several illegal breeders and the problem would not be solved unless the “puppy mills” were shut down mainly in the areas of Sriramapuram and Russell Market.
