Autonomy for KU Arts & Science College

The Arts and Science College of Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda, Warangal, got autonomous status. The University Grants Commission (UGS) has approved the status for the college which can conduct courses independent of the university from the academic year 2016-17. The syllabi of undergraduate and post-graduate courses can be updated by the college and it can design its own teaching methods, set question papers and conduct examinations independently though it continues to be a KU affiliate. The university would only monitor its financial matters. The university's executive council is yet to approve the autonomy status.

Mini University

The Arts and Science College in Hanamkonda is considered a mini university with its sprawling 40-acre campus, several buildings and all the infrastructure required for various arts and science faculties at UG and PG level. The late former prime PV Narasimha Rao was an alumnus of the college which was established in 1927 as a collegiate high school and came under Osmania University in 1959 by starting UG courses. The college was shifted to KU in 1976 and it started PG courses in 1995. The college is now conducting UG courses in 30 combinations, 10 PG courses and a vocational course. The college got NAAC accreditation with Grade A in 2004 and re-accredited in 2014-15.

Despite good academic performance, the Arts and Science College is facing a severe staff crunch as the recruitment of regular teachers did not place in years. For 90 teaching posts, there are only 23 regular professors now. With the college obtaining autonomous status, it's hoped that the regular teaching posts will be filled soon.
