VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh State Municipal and Urban Development minister Botsa Satyanarayana said the Municipal elections for all the municipalities and corporations in the State would be held in the month of February next year. Addressing the media at the Government Guest House in Visakhapatnam, he said that all efforts were being made to conduct the civic bodies elections smoothly.

Amaravati as State Capital

Clarifying the issue of making Amaravati as the capital, which was raised by the TDP council members during the Friday proceedings of the Legislative Council, he said that as of now no decision has been taken to shift the Capital. The Government will take a call only after the GN Rao Committee Report is submitted. After the report is submitted it will be tabled in the Legislative Assembly and discussed, he said.

Building works which are half done to be completed

The Minister also said that Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy directed the officials to complete the pending works of all buildings in the Capital region where 55% work was already completed. Satyanarayana said that the State government was committed to the welfare of the farmers in the Capital region and justice would be done to them.

Vizag Metro Rail project

Talking about the proposed metro rail project in Visakhapatnam, he said that it would be taken up in two phases. Elaborating about the project, Botsa said that the Gajuwaka-Kommadi project is expected to extend up to the Steel Plant, and the Steel Plant to Anakapalle project will be stretched up to Bhogapuram, he informed. The foundation stone will be laid only after the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is prepared, he stated.

Bhogapuram Airport Construction

When asked about the proposed re-tendering of the Bhogapuram airport, he stated that there was no decision taken and it is still under discussion.

It may be recollected that that major infrastructure projects like the Bhogapuram International Airport, Ramayapatnam Port, Bandar Port, Amaravati Iconic Bridge and Muktyala Lift Irrigation scheme whose estimated cost ran into thousands of crores of rupees were cancelled. A massive scandal took place with regard to the tenders for the construction of the Bhogapuram Airport where the former TDP government invited only the private organizations for the tenders, therefore leaving out the Airports Authority of India (AAI). The AAI acquired the tender for the Airport's construction in the past, but, the Chandrababu government, citing various flimsy reasons and terminated the tender.
