HYDERABAD: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will start a probe into the murder and rape case of the then 19-year-old student Ayesha Meera. She was brutally sexually assaulted and killed in a hostel in Vijayawada in 2007.

The officials will conduct a re-autopsy of the deceased, buried victim on Saturday.

She was found in her hostel bathroom in a pool of blood with wounds.

Several students, women and social rights protested over the incident demanding justice to the victim.

In the period of investigation, police arrested a person named Satyam Babu on August 17, 2008. The police had claimed that he had been involved in similar cases.

Satyam Babu’s relatives and human rights activists alleged that police were trying to book him in an effort to cover the actual culprits behind the heinous crime, who they believed to have political influence. They further come to know that Satyam Babu was unable to walk as well, as he suffers from a neurological disorder.

The Vijayawada women's special session court sentenced him to 14 years of imprisonment.

Later Satyam Babu challenged it in the High Court. In a Judgement, the court not only acquitted him but also awarded a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for being lodged in jail for eight years.

After Satyam Babu was acquitted in the case, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in the High Court to seek the re-investigation into the rape and murder case.

The High court directed CBI to investigate the case afresh on November 29,2018. Andhra Pradesh police were asked to hand over the details of the case to the CBI.

The CBI will now conduct an autopsy of the dead which was buried.
