Godavari Waters From Polavaram to Banakacherla Regulator To Irrigate 10 Lakh Acres

Tadepalli: Andhra Pradesh government has decided to divert Godavari waters from the Polavaram dam in to the Banakacherla head regulator. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had taken this decision in a review meeting held with irrigation officials held on Monday.

As part of this, the Godavari Banakacherla Interlinking Project is intended to divert about 23,000 Cusecs i.e., 2 TMC per day (210 TMC) of Godavari Water to the Banakacharla Head Regulator in 105 Days. It has also decided to construct a 150 TMC capacity balancing reservoir at Bollapalle in Guntur district for the purpose of diverting water .By this, lakhs of acres will be benefitted where irrigation and drinking water will be supplied to drought areas

Subsequently, 9.61 lakh acres at Nagarjuna Sagar’s right canal basin will be irrigated. As a part of this 2 lakh acres in Kanigiri at Prakasam districts will also receive irrigation water. Moreover, the idea is to meet the drinking water requirements for Guntur and Prakasam districts.

In addition to this, water from Banakacherla regulator will be supplied to the Veligonda, KC Canal, Telugu Ganga Project, SRBC and other projects. For this purpose around 2100 MW electricity will be required for this.

The primary budget for this project is estimated to be at Rs 60,000 crore. The Chief Minister instructed the officials to prepare a DPR for the same. .
