AP Sets Up Panel To Check Feasibility Of Amaravati As Capital City

Andhra Pradesh: The Andhra Pradesh government has set up a five-member committee headed by retired IAS officer G N Rao on Friday, to review developmental plans initiated by the TDP Party during its rule in Amaravati.

The committee is to submit a detailed report within six weeks over the strategy for the all-round development of Andhra Pradesh, including the upcoming capital Amaravati.

The Committee is formed with a team of experts comprising architects, city planners, environmental and flood management issues. Dr. Mahaveer from School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, Dr. Anjali Mohan, Urban and Regional Planner, Prof Shivananda Swamy, CEPT, Ahmadabad, Prof KT Ravindran, Delhi School of Architecture and Dr. KV Arunachalam, Retd Chief Urban Planner of Chennai.

According to reports, the YSRCP government has taken up this step to form a committee to find out if Amaravati can be a capital city as both the World Bank and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), have withdrawn from the Amaravati capital city project. It is highly impossible for the government to gather funds without the support of the two banks.

After the recent floods in Amaravati region, the AP government has announced that it is not a safe place to construct capital, but TDP leaders are opposing YSRCP's announcement over AP Capital as Chandrababu Naidu wanted Amaravati, situated between Vijayawada and Guntur, to be developed as a grand capital.

The YSRCP Government will look into the feasibility of choosing Amaravati as state capital after the detailed report submitted by the committee.
