Guntur Says ‘Badhai Ho’ As Elderly Farmer Couple Welcome Twin Babies

Guntur: An elderly farmer couple named Y Raja Rao and Mangayamma in East Godavari were blessed with twin girls, after 57 years of waiting for a child. The couple got married in 1962 and trying to have a child since then. The new mother is 73 years old and never imagined that that she could give birth at this age. But the couple moved to Chennai last year to undergo IVF (Invitro Fertilisation) treatment and successfully completed it.

In November 2018, when they visited Ahalya Hospital in Guntur, they got the confirmation of her pregnancy. Expert in IVF specialty and Dr Shanakkayala Umashankar, Director of Ahalya Hospital spoke about her pregnancy and treatment.

They mentioned that she was absolutely fit during her pregnancy period and carried a healthy baby as she did not have BP, diabetes or any other health issues. She was given special care in the hospital itself. She was under the observation of Dr. PV Manohar, Cardiologist and Dr. Shanakkayal Udayshankar, an expert in General Medicine.

Around 10 am on Thursday morning, Mangayamma successfully gave birth to twin girls through cesarean section and became the ‘first woman’ in India to give birth at the age of 73. She beat 70-year-old Daljinder Kaur who was considered to be the oldest woman in the world to give birth to a baby.
