As per details specified by the deceased's family members, Mounika was staying with her parents Kadirikota Narsanna and Rameswaramma in Harijanawada at Yemmiganur. She was studying second year intermediate in the Government Junior College. Experiencing hair loss and wanting to improve her hair growth, she sought medicine for this condition. Two months ago she visited Pallavi Poly Clinic and Medical Shop near Siva Circle , where a doctor from Kurnool named Sarathchandra would come for consulting. The doctor gave her medicines for her hair problem and after using it she developed boils on her whole body.

She brought this to the notice of the Polyclinic and Medical shop owner. Her parents also requested that the doctor be called for or at least call him on the phone. The medical shop management said that there was no need to worry, that the boils would subside on their own and sent them back.

Her parents were coming to the shop since three days requesting for medical help, but they paid no heed. On Sunday night, Mounika's condition deteriorated and she died. Angered at the death of their daughter, her parents and other family members reached the Medical shop on Monday and staged protests. They closed the shop and informed the police, requesting them to take action against the errant doctor and medical shop owners who were absconding.
