Amaravati: Following the release of water from the Pulichintala Project, 70 gates in the Prakasam Barrage here have been lifted where more than 25,000 cusecs of water were released into the Krishna River on Tuesday.

With the threat of floodwater looming in the low-lying areas, relief teams are moving people from the inland areas to safer areas.

The floods are now threatening the Leader of the Opposition and the TDP Chief N Chandrababu Naidu's Lingamaneni residence at Undavalli on the banks of Krishna River. It is reported that Chandrababu Naidu along with his family members might have shifted to Hyderabad for safety in the wake of floods. His cars have been shifted to a place called Happy Resorts.

Meanwhile his staff are in the process of laying gravel and sandbags around the house to prevent the flood waters entering the banks, on which his house is situated. The luggage in the lower rooms of Chandrababu Naidu's house has been shifted to the first floor.

Mangalagiri MLA and CRDA Chairman Alla Ramakrishna Reddy who is overseeing rescue operations in the region, said that more than 10,000 bags of sand and gravel were brought in by Chandrababu's staff and laid around the illegal structure. JCBs and tractors were deployed to procure the sand at the behest of the TDP leader who was concerned about the safety of his residence, he scoffed.

In an open message to the TDP Chief, the CRDA Chairman said that now with floods threatening his house, Chandrababu Naidu should at least now vacate his house and heed to the notices sent by the court. "It would be appropriate that he sets an example to the other 50 owners who have illegal buildings on the banks of the River Krishna, by vacating his residence", he said. He also said that with the flood situation endangering the residents, it is high time that he paid heed to the environmental laws and set a precedent, by evacuating the building.

The water level at Prakasam Barrage has reached maximum capacity in the wake of floods coming from the Pulichinthala project. The capacity of the barrage which is around 3.07 TMC has reached full capacity, with the inflow at 4.12 lakh cusecs and outflow at 4.12 lakh cusecs. Officials say that if the floods continue like this, there is a risk of the banks flooding completely.

People residing in the low-lying areas have been apprised of the situation. Government machinery have already evacuated people living in the encroached river bed and rescue teams have been deployed to villages near the river for shifting them, should there be any flooding.
