Visakhapatnam: In a case of medical inaccessibility in the rural areas, a pregnant woman had to be carried for more than six kilometres to a hospital on a 'doli' (makeshift stretcher).

The woman, Janapareddi Devi, was taken in the stretcher to the KJ Puram hospital from Kothavalasa tribal hamlet under V Madugula mandal in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday as ambulance 108 could not enter the village due to poor road conditions.

The village is only 100 kms away from the bustling commercial city of Vishakhpatnam.

Six persons, including three women held the stretcher which was made of a cloth and tied to a wooden log.

The pregnant woman also kept her lifted up and held onto the cloth as she was taken to the hospital.

The woman gave birth to a baby girl on Sunday at 10 am and both of them are in stable condition.
