Hyderabad: Sticking to its election promise of implementing liquor ban in a phased manner, the state excise department of the new government is making all efforts to bring it in force. In a move towards that direction the department is pondering to close all alcohol outlets by 6 pm instead of 10 pm.

The rationale behind is that most people prefer to drink in the evening after work. About 70 per cent of the businesses are conducted at that time. So the move will play as a demotivation for guzzlers.

An excise department official was quoted saying by a leading daily, "“People may not quit drinking with the reduction of operating hours, but their frequency will come down."

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had promised that once in power, he will implement liquor ban in a phased manner and if her does not fulfill the promise, he will not ask for a second term.

After taking charge as the CM, he has ordered officials to prepare a new policy and fulfill it in the next four years.

After the lapse of the existing liquor policy om June 30, the government has extended the license for three moths till September 30. But, more than 800 liquor ships have not extended their licenses, according to the leading daily.
