Vijayawada: Reeling under the pressure of loans, a businessman set himself on fire. The man, identified as Lakshman Rao was rushed to a private medical hospital in Vijayawada but he succumbed to the burns while undergoing treatment on Saturday.
According to the police, Lakshman Rao was running a transport business and had borrowed money from private money lenders, Sarada and Ameer.
Since Lakshman Rao was unable to pay the interest of the loan, Sarada had asked him to register some part of his property in her name. Later, he registered two cents of land owned by him in the name of the private money lender. However, he failed to repay the remaining loans.
On June 24, he set himself on fire at his residence in Chodavaram village. His daughter, after hearing his screams, rushed to his rescue and attempted to douse the flames, instead suffered burn injuries herself. The neighbours rushed both the victims to the nearby hospital for treatment. The daughter is undergoing treatment and is in a stable condition. The Vijayawada police who were informed about the incident have registered a case and are investigating further.
