Vijayawada: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Court extended the bail period of Janupalli Srinivasa Rao till July 12. Srinivasa Rao is the prime accused in the attack-case against Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy in Visakhapatnam in October last year.

The NIA court rendered the judgement on Wednesday extending his bail till July 12. NIA authorities requested the Court to cancel his bail petition citing various reasons as the investigation was still pending. However, the court had rejected their contention and extended his bail.

After spending almost seven months in remand, Srinivasa Rao, was released on bail from the Rajahmundry Central Prison on May 23.

It may be recollected, that the Andhra Pradesh High Court on January 7 issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in the case on the attack on YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) Chief YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

YS Jagan's advocate had argued that the case should be transferred to the NIA, adhering to the NIA Act. It was also argued that there was a chance for evidence tampering if the probe into the case was delayed. The NIA was called in to investigate the matter.

It may be recalled that YS Jagan was attacked with a sharp knife on 25 October, 2018 by a restaurant worker, Srinivasa Rao, inside the VIP lounge of Visakhapatnam airport. Except for the then TDP government, the Centre and all political parties across the country were suspicious about a potential conspiracy behind the attack.

Right from minutes from the attack, CM Chandrababu Naidu, DGP RP Thakur, and TDP leaders tried to deviate the case with their statements while playing down the murder attempt.

With this, the YSRCP approached the High Court demanding a fair and transparent probe by a national agency on the matter.

Following the Home Ministry's orders, the Hyderabad NIA division filed an FIR on the matter. Mohammed Sajid Khan was appointed as the Chief Investigation Officer.
