Visakhapatnam: Five Charred To Death As Auto Rams Into Electric Pole

Visakhapatnam: Five people were charred to death and six others including, four children, injured when their auto rickshaw rammed into an electric pole in Visakhapatnam agency on Sunday.

All the five died of electrocution after the overhead cable snapped and fell on the vehicle under the impact of the collision, police said. “The auto was travelling from the Korukonda weekly market to Cheruvuru. It was raining and the driver lost control of the overloaded vehicle. Subsequently, the vehicle hit the electric pole,” said Chintapalle inspector K. Sridhar said.

While five of them were burnt alive, some were thrown out of the auto rickshaw, they added.Locals rushed the injured to the nearby primary health care centre, where they were referred to Narsipatnam area hospital.

The five victims were Vanjuraba Gangaraju (37), Lotha Bonjibabu (30) auto driver Vanthala Krishna Rao (25) and Janguru Prasad of Thadapalli who lost their lives on the spot. The seven injured were taken to Lothugedda hospital where Vunjuruba Chittabu (55) died. Among the other victims were Vivek (1), Vanjuraba Chinnabbai (45) Vandalam Rammurthi (40), Lotha Varalakshmi (30) Pathuna Jaanubabu (2) and Vechangi Davidu (2). They were then shifted to Narsipatnam area hospital. Padeeru MLA Kottigulli Bhagyalakshmi rushed to the hospital and enquired about the welfare of the victims. Padeeru Sub Collector Venkatesh also reached the hospital and enquired about the victims health.

YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expresses anguish,announces Rs 5 Lakh ex gratia to victims

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed anguish over the accident.In a statement, he conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families.He also directed Visakhapatnam District Collector K Bhaskar to grant ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the victims families as per prevailing rules to the kin of the deceased. Speaking to the media the collector said that the victims who had insurance would be paid RS 5 lakh and for those who don’t have insurance a sum of Rs 5 lakh ex gratia would be granted. He said that the children who were injured in the accident had suffered 40 to 50 % burns.Once the injured are given treatment at Narsipatnam they would be shifted to King George Hospital in Viskahapatnam for better treatment, he said.
