Cyclone Fani To Intensify, Coastal Andhra On High Alert

Vijayawada: The Indian Meteorological Department warned on Monday evening that the Cyclone Storm 'Fani' is likely to intensify severely in the next 24 hours. The coastal states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal are on high alert.

Amid indications that Cyclone Fani could head towards the Odisha coast after May 1, as of now it is less than 1,000 km from the south AP coast.

The Cyclone is expected to bring moderate rain over south coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday and on the Vizag coast on May 2. From May 3, North coastal AP is likely to experience heavy rainfall.

On Monday, Union cabinet secretary PK Sinha took stock of the situation and held a video conference with the chief secretaries of coastal states. Two advisories were issued by the Home Ministry on the impending natural calamity.

The officials in the state including collectors of all coastal districts have been directed to stay alert and prepare for the cyclonic situation.

According to the Met department, Telangana could expect some rainfall later in the week due to the impact of Cyclone Fani.
