kakinada: Cockfight enthusiasts predicted that the prices of the birds would come down, along with a lot of buzz around the event, post-court orders, and police patrol.

But the situation remains unchanged every Sankranti season at Sunday market in Bhimavaram in West Godavari. The price range of the roosters varied from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000 this time. These special birds were also sold in other places like Tallarevu, Mummidivaram, Muramalla, Ayinavilli and especially in East Godavari and West Godavari.

According to sources, the Asil variety breed costs somewhere between Rs 70,000 to Rs 1,00,000. These birds are specially grown for Sankranti and particular breeds are handpicked for the purpose. According to bird vendors, there are up to 12 breeds in the birds, with names like Dega, Kaki, Pesangi or Pathangi, Asil and others. The birds are fed with nutritious food like cashew nuts, almonds, and non-veg too. They are also given special food recommended by veterinarians.

After selecting the birds they are given a bath twice a day and are trained in swimming and flying ahead of the fight.According to the sources these birds are very delicious, because of their feed. The winning roosters fetch a handsome price in the market.
