Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy mourned the demise of former Speaker of Lok Sabha Somnath Chatterjee.

In Somnath's death, India today lost an outstanding parliamentarian, who was elected to the Lok Sabha for a record 10 terms, the Chief Minister said in a message.

"As a longstanding parliamentarian, Somnath rendered exemplary services to the nation. He strove for the uplift of the poor and the downtrodden," Naidu said.

Somnaths death left a deep void that could not be filled, he said and extended sympathies to the bereaved family.

Expressing grief over Somnath's death, the YSR Congress president, Reddy noted that the former Marxist leader stood by values and embellished parliamentary decorum.

"The country has lost one of the most revered and articulate leaders driven by morals and values," he said.

AP Congress vice-president and former Assembly Speaker Nadendla Manohar too condoled the veteran Communist leader's death.

"As a parliamentarian and Speaker, Somnath enhanced the dignity of the House," Manohar recalled.

Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan also mourned the death of the former Speaker. (PTI)
