Law Enacted To Regulate Sale Of Liquor In Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Andhra Pradesh (Regulation of Trade in Indian Made Foreign Liquor, Foreign Liquor) Act, 1993 which enables the regulation of shop, bar and in-house licenses.

The Bill moved by Minister for Excise and Commercial Taxes K Narayana Swamy said that the legislation would eradicate violations in retailing of IMFL and enforcing strict regulations through exclusively retailing by public sector organisation.

Only the State Beverages Corporation Limited or any other entity owned and controlled by the State government would have the exclusive privilege of selling by the shop the IMFL in the entire State.

Members who participated in the discussion hailed Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for bringing in such legislation and said that the previous government has encouraged sale of cheap liquor and has opened numerous outlets causing serious concern.

The women organisations will be very appreciative of the Bill as it will drastically cut down the domestic violence besides bringing in the happy family concept, the members said. The Bill was passed by voice vote.

Taking to Twitter on Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy said that that may families were destroyed because of alcohol abuse and as promised to the women folk of Andhra Pradesh , belt shops would be closed down in a phase-wise manner and would be dealt with strictly. He also said that the government would control and regulate the sale of liquor through the newly enacted law (Andhra Pradesh (Regulation of Trade in Indian Made Foreign Liquor, Foreign Liquor) Act ).With the new law in force belt shops in villages will soon be closed permanently.
