Guntur: Former MP and senior TDP leader Rayapati Sambasiva Rao might leave the Telugu Desam Party and join the saffron party. According to sources, Rayapati is likely to visit New Delhi shortly and formally join the BJP.

It is reported that he had received an invitation from the BJP and looking at the current status of the TDP, he said to have taken the call to join the BJP. The speculation was fuelled by the fact that the BJP national general secretary Ram Madhav had met Rayapati at his residence during the latter’s recent visit to the town which was kept under the wraps.

This move was also necessitated by the fact that Rayapati’s company Transstroy which was first awarded the contract of constructing Polavaram dam faced troubles during the TDP regime when the company faced trouble and financial constraints to complete the project. Transstroy was ousted from the projects and Navayuga Constructions was then given the projects as the main contractor.

A heavyweight politician from Guntur region Rayapati Sambasiva Rao is a six-time MP .He was with Congress for over three decades and served as Lok Sabha member for four-terms and one Rajya Sabha term. He moved to TDP in 2014 and won the Narasaraopet Lok Sabha seat. The incumbent Sambasiva Rao Rayapati of the TDP was re- nominated for the second time after a high drama where the senior TDP politician was left fuming as his name was not mentioned in the first list. However, he lost the 2019 elections to YSRCP candidate Lavu Krishnadevarayalu.
