Amaravati: YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will now have the distinction of being the first Chief Minister whose father was a chief minister himself in Andhra Pradesh. Since the time Andhra Pradesh came into being in 1956, which witnessed 16 Chief Ministers, this is the first time in the state history that a son of a former CM became one himself.
YS Jagan's father, Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy who was popularly known as YSR, was a two-time Chief Minister Andhra Pradesh, serving from 2004 to 2009. A five-time MLA from Pulivendula, he undertook a three-month-long padayatra, (walkathon) of 1475 km across several districts in Andhra Pradesh as a part of his election campaign. He led his party to victory in the assembly elections held in 2004, and did the same in 2009.
While YS Jagan was ready to take over as CM after his father's demise Sonia Gandhi appointed K Rosiah in the chief minister's chair who was replaced with Kiran Kumar Reddy. YS Jagan along with his mother Y S Vijayamma, quit the Congress in 2010 to start his own party- YSR Congress Party. In 2014 the YSRCP won 67 seats in the Assembly relegating it to second place in the state.

However, YS Jagan refused to admit defeat and completed Praja Sankalpa Yatra a 'padayatara' like his father did, which stretched for 14 months and ended this January. Jagan travelled through all the districts of Andhra Pradesh mingling with people.
With this 47-year-old YS Jagan swept into power after the 2019 elections defeating 69-year-old Chandrababu Naidu who had snapped ties with the NDA government to become one of the youngest Chief ministers of the country.

Even though former CM Jalagam Vengala Rao's sons are active in politics, they did not become chief ministers. This is true of PV Narasimha Rao's sons as well. Marri Chenna Reddy's son Marri Shashidhar Reddy became a minister. Kotla Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy's son Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy became a minister in the union cabinet. However, none of them rose to become a chief minister. YS Jagan stands out in this respect.
