If you thought KA Paul gave you some funny moments during the course of the election campaign in Andhra Pradesh in the last one month, former prime minister and JD (S) Supremo Deve Gowda could win the Oscar award for the funniest line of AP Elections 2019. Heaping fulsome praise on TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, the JD (S) patriarch predicted that AP Chief Minister would become the next prime minister. Deve Gowda added that the country was looking forward to Chandrababu’s leadership and the TDP would get about 150 assembly seats and win 20 parliamentary constituencies. Not stopping there, he referred to Chandrababu Naidu as honourable prime minister changing it later to would-be prime minister.
Deve Gowda’s predictions on Chandrababu, the TDP and AP Elections can point only to two things—either senility has overtaken him to the point that he does not know what he is talking about or he has zero understanding of ground realities in Andhra Pradesh. Chandrababu has once again proved that he has to depend on electoral crutches in the form of borrowed leaders like Farooq Abdullah, who has little clout in his own state or for that matter in his community, Arvind Kejriwal, who is staring at defeat himself going by all predictions, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who’s fighting her back to the wall after having been accused of involvement in the massive Saradha chit fund scam and now the JDS elder Deve Gowda, who hardly carries any weight outside Karnataka. Senior journalists wonder why Devegowda arguably the seniormost politician in the country should devalue his image as former prime minister by showering such lavish praise on an undeserving leader like Chandrababu who has only thrived on backstabbing and deception.
